GBP Heatmap Reports: Local SEO Heatmap Tools Priced (2026)

A GBP heatmap shows where a Google Business Profile ranks in Google Maps at every point of a grid around the business. It answers the question an average ranking can't: where do you show up, and where do you vanish? This guide covers how to read one, what a scan actually costs, and which local SEO heatmap tool fits which kind of user, with pricing checked on each vendor's own site in October 2026.

What a GBP Heatmap Measures

Google doesn't show one ranking for a local search. It shows a different local pack depending on where the searcher is standing. Google's own help page says local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity," and defines distance as "how far each business is from the customer who's searching" (Google Business Profile Help).

That is why a single rank check from your office is misleading. A heatmap tool (also called a geogrid, local rank grid or SEO heat map) runs the same keyword from many coordinates:

  1. It lays a grid over the map, for example 7 points by 7 points, centered on the business.
  2. At each point it runs the search as if the searcher were standing there.
  3. It records where the profile appears in the Maps results at that point.
  4. It colors the point: green for positions 1–3, yellow or orange for 4–10, red for 11 and below.

How much does distance matter? In Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey of 47 local search experts (published November 6, 2025), "Proximity of Address to the Point of Search" ranks #2 of all local pack and Maps factors with a score of 225. Only "Primary GBP Category" scores higher, at 227, and "Keywords in GBP Business Title" sits just behind at 223 (Whitespark, 2026). The same proximity factor ranks only #41 for regular organic results. So a heatmap is the only practical way to see the factor that matters most in the Maps pack and barely matters anywhere else.

How to Read a Heatmap: 4 Patterns

The average position in the corner of the report is the least useful number on it. Read the shape instead.

PatternWhat it looks likeWhat it usually meansFirst fix
BullseyeGreen at the center, red within 1–2 milesRanking on proximity alone. No relevance or prominence to carry the profile further outPrimary category, services, review volume
LopsidedGreen on one side, red on the otherA competitor dominates one direction, or the city boundary splits the gridLook up who holds position 1 in the red zone and compare categories and reviews
Even yellowMostly positions 4–10 everywhereRelevant but not prominent. Google knows what you do but trusts others moreReviews, citations, posting cadence
Mostly greenTop 3 across most of the gridStrong profile. The grid may be too small to show the edgeWiden the grid or add harder keywords

Two habits make the patterns trustworthy:

  • Scan at the same time and the same day of week. Different tools, and even the same tool at different hours, can return different results because grid points sit in slightly different places and the local pack shifts through the day.
  • Track several keywords, not one. A profile can be green for "plumber" and red for "water heater repair". The service keywords are often where the money is.

What a Heatmap Scan Costs

Almost every geogrid tool bills in credits, and one credit is one grid point. Local Falcon's FAQ states that a 5x5 scan "will utilize 25 credits" and that "a 7x7 grid is 49 credits" (Local Falcon FAQ). Whitespark says "each grid point costs 1 credit to scan" (Whitespark). Local Dominator also uses one credit per scan point, but its circle-shaped grids skip the corners: a 13x13 circle uses 133 credits against 169 for the square (Local Dominator Help, updated October 6, 2026).

Grid sizePointsCredits per scan
3x399
5x52525
7x74949
9x98181
13x13169169

A realistic monthly budget per location: 5 keywords × a 7x7 grid × 4 weekly scans = 980 credits per location per month.

  • At Local Falcon's Starter plan ($24.99 for 7,500 credits), that covers 7 locations, about $3.57 per location.
  • At Whitespark's $10 plan (2,000 credits), it covers 2 locations, $5 per location. At $50 (15,000 credits) it covers 15 locations, about $3.33.
  • At Local Falcon's pay-as-you-go rate of $0.05 per credit, the same tracking costs $49 per location.
  • For an agency with 25 locations (24,500 credits), Local Falcon Pro ($99.99, 31,250 credits) or Whitespark's $100 plan (32,000 credits) both land at about $4 per location.

The variable that moves cost most is scan frequency, not grid size. Daily scans multiply the budget by 7. Weekly is enough for most clients because Maps rankings rarely move in a way you can act on day to day.

Local Falcon

A standalone geogrid tool. Grids run from 3x3 up to 21x21, and every plan includes unlimited keywords and locations, so you only pay for credits. It's the cheapest option per location once you're past a handful of clients. What it doesn't do is change anything on the profile: it measures, and you fix.

Whitespark Local Ranking Grids

The lowest entry price in the group, at $10 a month for 2,000 credits, and grids from 4 to 225 points. Whitespark also runs the annual Local Search Ranking Factors survey cited above. Unused credits expire each billing period, so buy for the volume you actually scan.

BrightLocal

The Local Search Grid is part of BrightLocal's Track, Manage and Grow plans ($41, $54 and $65 a month at one location, billed monthly). Choose it if you already want citation tracking, review monitoring and reporting from the same vendor. BrightLocal doesn't publish a per-plan grid credit count, so check the allowance in the trial before you commit a large client list.

Local Dominator

Local Dominator's main difference is the circle grid, which drops the corner points of a square grid and saves roughly 20% of credits at larger sizes. Its plans and prices aren't listed in the text of its public pricing page, so get a quote or use its credit estimator before comparing.

Lead Oracle AI

On cost per scan alone, the standalone tools above are cheaper. A heatmap only tells you where you're losing, though. Lead Oracle AI includes heatmap ranking and tracking in the same plan that runs autopilot GBP posting, AI recommendations with a change log, and white-labeled weekly reports, so the grid and the work that moves it sit in one place. If you only need the grid, buy a standalone tracker. If you're paying a person to act on it every week, compare that labor cost against the GMB management software, from $49 per location.

From Heatmap to Fix: What to Change in Each Red Zone

A heatmap is a diagnosis. These are the changes that most often turn red points yellow and yellow points green, in roughly the order they pay off:

  1. Primary category. It's the #1 local pack factor in Whitespark's 2026 survey. Compare yours with whoever holds position 1 in your red zone. A wrong or too-broad primary category caps your reach no matter what else you do.
  2. Service keywords in the profile. Add the services you track as heatmap keywords to your GBP services list and description. If a keyword is red everywhere, Google may not connect your profile to it at all.
  3. Reviews that name the service and the area. Review signals were one of the two biggest changes in Whitespark's 2026 report. Ask customers from weak zones for reviews, and reply to every one.
  4. Location pages on the website. A landing page for the neighborhood or town that sits in the red zone gives Google a relevance signal for that area.
  5. Consistent posting. Weekly posts that mention services and areas keep the profile active. This is the step most teams stop doing after month two.

Then re-scan on the same day of the week and compare. Look for the green ring widening, not for the average to jump.

How Agencies Use Heatmaps in Client Reporting

Heatmaps are the clearest local SEO proof you can put in front of a client who doesn't read ranking tables:

  • Before and after side by side. The first scan on day one, the latest scan this month. A wider green area is easier to explain than "average position improved from 8.4 to 5.1."
  • Competitor grids. Run the same grid for the client's top competitor. It turns "why aren't we #1?" into a specific answer about one direction or one service.
  • Sales audits. A heatmap of a prospect's profile shows exactly where they lose customers, which is a stronger opener than a generic audit score. Our GBP audit guide covers the rest of the checklist.
  • Monthly, not daily, in the report. Scan weekly for your own decisions, but show clients monthly snapshots. Day-to-day movement looks like noise to them.

Key Takeaways

  • A GBP heatmap shows your Maps ranking at every point of a grid. Proximity, the factor it measures, is the #2 local pack factor in Whitespark's 2026 survey, behind primary category.
  • One grid point is one credit. A 7x7 scan is 49 credits. Tracking 5 keywords weekly costs about 980 credits per location per month.
  • On monthly plans that works out to $3–$5 per location on Local Falcon or Whitespark, and $49 per location at Local Falcon's pay-as-you-go rate.
  • Read the shape, not the average: a bullseye means you rank on proximity alone.
  • Fix in order: primary category, service keywords, reviews, location pages, posting.
